It’s All About Fun and Easy to Play Games for Casual Players
(Biggest opportunity is Casual Players NOT Competitive Players)

It took me far too long to figure out that anything designed for a highly competitive person is a crappy business to be in – especially when it comes to operating a successful out-of-home entertainment venue.

The reality is that it’s harder than ever to get people to leave their homes, which means we have to truly understand what’s going to motivate people to leave their homes to hang out with their friends and family at our venues.

It’s also a reality that many people feel a bit stressed just thinking about going out, so we need to provide welcoming places where they can relax and spend time with their friends and family. We need to provide them with fun and easy to play games for casual players – NOT stressful gaming experiences designed to be highly competitive.

To repeat, most people just want a friendly place where they can go with friends and family. A place that is inviting and enables them to shed their troubles the moment they walk in the door.

Problem: Game Designers can turn a good Social Gaming experience into a bad one

People in positions of influence, like game designers, are almost always gamers, which means they are usually highly competitive. When designing games, their default setting is to create new ways to make each gaming experience even more intense and competitive.

Key Question: We all want to make our gaming experiences the best they can be, BUT for WHO?

By making an out-of-home gaming experience more intense and competitive, we ultimately attract a smaller and smaller percentage of the overall population.

Most people are looking for out-of-home venues where they can chill and have some fun. Unfortunately, there are very few places with a variety of fun and easy to play Social Gaming experiences – especially ones where their friends and family can play together at the same time.

It’s important to point out that people have a billion cheap or free entertainment options they can experience by simply staying home. In addition, they can order their favorite food from their favorite restaurant and have it delivered right to their door.

If we don’t figure out how to cater to the casual majority, we are NOT going to succeed long-term.

We created the above rendering for one of our clients - it shows a custom branded game.
Out-of-Home Venues for Casual Players

Why is it so important to design for casual players who just want to relax and have fun as opposed to designing games for competitive players?

First, highly competitive players are a fraction of the market opportunity – probably less than 10%. While highly competitive players like to compete, even most of them run out of steam and just want the same experiences casual players want (i.e. fun, low stress, casual gaming experiences).

Second, if we design our gaming experiences for competitive players, we ultimately lose most of the Casual Players, which means we are going to lose 90 percent of our upside revenue potential.

If we all want to attract significantly more revenue, we have to provide our guests with fun and easy to play social gaming experiences that the entire family or group of friends can play together at the same time.
